Shobak’s a gorgeous Crusader Castle, in the Jordanian Desert. It was previously called ‘Krak de Montreal‘. It’s among the most evocative castles I’ve seen, owing to it’s location, it’s surroundings, the well carved and eroded stone and sand and villages all around. The views from the top are top-notch.
It’s located about 25km from Petra. Took a taxi(30 JD return, against Valentine Inn’s 50 JD price). The taxi guy was a very interesting person and a good singer. The castle surpassed my expectations by a very large amount. Firstly, it’s location was excellent, it was in a completely deserted area with nicely eroded hills all around. And then there were tiny specks of greenery which brought in a lot of contrast. And the wind..wow, so that’s castle + wind + remote location. And no people. And the late afternoon light with a cloudiness too was superb. The entire area was like some signature picture of a more exotic country like Yemen or Oman(Jordan too is exotic enough).
